Bringing the Love 2013 in Micronesia

Okay ya'll, this event is for 2013, "Bringing the Love" to the islands of Chuuk in Micronesia
For those of you that have not been to Chuuk, Micronesia, it is located about 600 miles southeast of Guam. Chuuk State consists of 11 mangrove-fringed islands in the Chuuk Lagoon, and a series of 14 outlying atolls and low islands surrounding the lagoon.
The main islands, Weno, Tonoas, Uman and Fefan are located in the Chuuk Lagoon.
The outlying area called Faichuk, also known as Tol, is a group of four islands separated from one another by narrow canals in the western part of Truk Lagoon, Chuuk, Micronesia. The tightly-knit islands are considered as one for statistical and administrative purposes. The islands are Paata (Pata), Polle, Wonei (Onei), and Tol (these four, because of their proximity, are sometimes collectively subsumed under the island name Tol), Eot, Fanapanges, Romanum and Udot
Of Chuuk's population of around 53,000, more than 40,000 live on islands in the lagoon.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints currently has missionaries serving on the islands Weno, Uman, Tonoas, Romanum, Udot, Paata. The Jehovah Witnesses have missionaries on many of the same islands.
Commerce is limited here, if not impossible. To purchase items, when or if you can, it might be VERY EXPENSIVE. Other than the local food everything must be imported, so everything depends on the container shipping companies.

The Chuukese people are some of the most loving, honest, charitable people in the world. They will give to everyone even if they need it themselves first.
Bringing the Love was created by experienced volunteers for people who are eager to travel and contribute to the communities, wildlife, and environment they visit.

We know that many people are looking for an opportunity to help somehow but are just not sure where or who to turn to. We could use your help @ "Bringing the Love" to Chuuk.
This is the second project in this area and hopefully there will be many more in the years to come.

We are hoping you will pick something on this list of choices and invite others to take part.

The Chuuk Women's Council has an on going class for young girls, "Youth at Risk" ages 17-28 every 8 weeks. It's focus is to educate females about how to take care of themselves and their children.
We need gently used or new baby clothing - all types and sizes.
Please check out previous post on this for more information.

Mother, baby class

These wonderful ladies are the officers of Chuuk Women's council ~  they have 17 other groups of women from all over Chuuk state that participate.  They promote women’s leadership, education on health and gender issues, environmental conservation, and the preservation of traditional and cultural crafts.  The center is a formerly registered Non-Governmental Organization in the Federated States of Micronesia and possesses a Non-Profit, Tax Exempt Number, that allows the deduction of donations by U.S. contributors.

The pictures are of the first group of young mothers involved in the "Mother & Child" classes they just started this year.  We have had the opportunity through the "Bringing the Love" project to Chuuk to donate many baby clothes and baby toys for the class.  There are many opportunities where we have come to know other people and build unity.  We have learned the importance of having an attitude of "what can I give today?" rather than "what will I get today?"

The group is for ages 12-25 years old and the class is up to 2 months.  They meet twice a week if they are a mother now and it is limited to 15 ladies a class.
They will learn many things starting with how to take care of their bodies, how and why is it is important to understand family planning, how to feed their baby and create healthy meals for both mother and child.

They will get to learn the general knowledge of how they conceived a baby.
In many cases it has been less than an ideal situation. They could be victims of incest, rape etc. and the girls are given the opportunity to speak with a counselor during the class and after.

With this class they will learn to understand their bodies, and how to care for their babies.
The teacher who is teaching right now is a registered nurse volunteering from the United States.  She is a  darling girl named Chelsie but she returns to the states in April.  At that time another nurse from Japan will step in and teach.
I can't express here what a wonderful program this is and how much help is needed for these lovely young ladies.
If you would like to help and are interested in donating, here is a list of things they need.
Baby clothing 0-2yrs
Recieving blankets
Bibs
Cloth or plastic diapers
Calendars - free ones from the bank would be great - for tracking their cycles and planning.
Writing pens or pencils (with sharpners)
The postage to Chuuk is U.S. postage - Please use a flat rate postage box, weight does not matter with flat rate and they are shipped first class or priority.  If it is shipped any other way it takes about 4-6 months to get here and most of the time it cost a lot more for shipping.

Please mail donations to:
Chuuk Women Council Attn: Grace
C/O Bringing the Love Project
PO Box 1627
Weno, Chuuk 96942

When filling out the custom form please keep the amount under $200.00 per box and mark donation on the paper.
We would also like to ask you to please send us an email message @ dartnrg@yahoo.com if you are interested in helping.  This way we can keep track of the packages being sent out and give the ladies a heads up what on the way.
Grace (the sweet gal in charge) will keep us informed when things arrive. If you need a tax receipt and pictures we can make sure you receive them just let us know what you need.
